Obrigada Kika! I love corrections – I try hard to avoid mistakes but definitely appreciate any and all help! Those spelling errors must stick out to you in the way that English language ones would for me. Thanks for taking the time to comment – I’ve updated and corrected the piece <3

As a Madeiran tho i have to correct you on something: Your Statement “Coral is the local beer brand, and while it’s now owned by Heineken” is actually not true at all. Coral is still very much a Madeiran Brand, as well as owned and produced locally!

Also not to nitpick but checking the spelling of some dishes would be advisable (like: Peixe espada pretA, bolo dO caco).

Thanks Jerry! I’ve been trying to dig up an answer for you for the past week, but no luck yet. I know it usually falls the weekend before and after the religious date of August 20 “dia de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia” – so in 2026 I’d guess the dates will be 15-23 August (give or take a day). I hope that helps! I’ll publish the new dates as soon as I have them 🙂

I relish your round ups; they plunge me into reminiscent mode, simultaneously enlightening and enthusing. Looking forward to ‘travelling’ more with you next year. Parabèans!

Hi Fiona! So glad to hear you love my site 🙂 Oh, I know exactly who you’re talking about – I can’t recall the name, but I remember unfortunately she shut production. The next closest thing would be traditional Viana embroidery perhaps – I mention a couple of stores here https://oladaniela.com/viana-do-castelo/#7_Buy_Viana_embroidery Not quite the same as her modern take, but still beautiful.

It is so helpful. I think I saw that you included (a few years ago) a company/lady who does beautiful hand embroidered shirts(for both men and women), dresses, even bespoke shirts and a kit – colourful with hearts, flowers, words etc. I cannot seem to find the business now. Hoping you can help!

After the first 17 km, which are moderate, the rest of the 40 km route is downhill, through forests and along the river. An outfitter at Santa Comba do Dão can rent and deliver bikes, and bring you back to Viseu at day’s end. It makes for a great outing.
